Ego is like a rear-view mirror that is tilted to reflect oneself. The mirror reflects not only ourselves, but what is behind us as well — the past. When we look in the rear-view mirror of our ego, we see a reflection of ourselves and our history. The mirror is our concept of ourselves and our world. Our focus upon our concepts of ourselves and the world is our focus on the mirror, rather than the world in which our mirror is just a small object, that only we find particularly interesting. The greater our insecurity, the more we focus on our own reflection in the mirror, which is only a part of the view, and the more often we feel the need to check ourselves in the mirror — to see how we look in the context of our own conceptual context. Checking the rear-view mirror in our cars is dangerous because it distracts us from the road and traffic. Focusing on our concepts of ourselves and our world is even more dangerous, because it distracts us from observing the Big World that surrounds us.
